A behind the scenes look at our family farm on the Warwickshire – Leicestershire border.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens on a real working farm during the quieter winter months, January and February are all about preparation, care, and getting everything ready the busy seasons ahead.
We’re a mixed farm, so even when the landscape looks calm, there’s usually always plenty happening behind the scenes.
Winter on a Working Family Farm
While the fields may appear still, winter is when we focus on:
• Caring for our livestock
• Maintaining farm infrastructure and machinery
• Preparing land for spring drilling
• Getting ready for calving and lambing
Looking After Our Livestock
Animal welfare is our top priority. Throughout January and February, our days revolve around caring for our cattle, pigs, and sheep, ensuring they’re healthy, well-fed, and comfortable during the colder weather.
• January is when we scan our ewes to check for pregnancy and plan ahead for lambing.
• Calving typically begins towards the end of February, with lambing following not long after.
Farm Maintenance & Groundwork
Winter is also the ideal time to tackle essential maintenance jobs that are harder to fit in during busier months:
• Repairing existing fences and installing new fencing for future pasture
• General yard work and farm maintenance
• Servicing and repairing machinery so it’s ready for spring
• Preparing the ground ahead of later drilling
All of this groundwork helps ensure a smooth transition into the growing season.
As winter draws to a close, our attention starts turning to the fields. We typically begin spring arable work in early March, depending on weather and ground conditions.
