With Halloween done and dusted its time to think of bonfire night and comfort food. The weather is pretty miserable and what better way to warm up after the bonfire than bangers and mash.
Our butchers counter, hand make a wide range of delicious sausages from pork reared on our farm. For bonfire night we have a special new flavour, hickory smoked pork with peppers and sweet onion. Great as a hot dog next to the fire or as an accompaniment to bangers and mash.
We have grown three varieties of potatoes on our farm this year. Two whites, Wilja and Marfona and a red variety called Stemster.
Wilja is a very versatile potato, long and oval in shape with a rough yellow skin and light yellow flesh. Wilja is a waxy potato, suitable for boiling, roasting, chipping and baking. Wilja mashes beautifully and has an excellent flavour. Available in the shop loose at 50p/kg in 2.5kg bags for £1, a 10kg bag is £3.50 and 25kg is £6.00.
Stemster potatoes are oval, large-sized potatoes with pink skin and yellow flesh. In terms of cooking properties Stemster is described as a waxy potato but is suitable for boiling, roasting, chipping, baking and mashing. Available in the farm shop in 10kg bags at £3.50 or 25kg for £6.00.
Marfona (pictured) has moderately waxy texture. The size is good and the shape far more oval than Wilja. It has a light brown or yellow skin and a yellow to cream flesh. It has a strong flavour and is very good for boiling and mashing, but will roast and chip too. It’s also great as a jacket potato ideal for the bonfire. Only available in the shop in 25kg bags but at the bargain price of £5.00
