Calving Time on the Farm

 19th March 2025

It’s an exciting time here at Malt Kiln Farm Shop, as calving season is well underway! Our suckler herd is growing with the arrival of healthy new calves, settling into their straw-bedded yards for the final stretch of winter to early spring.

As late spring approaches, the herd will head out to graze on lush pasture, where they’ll remain until the colder months return. This natural cycle ensures they enjoy a grass-fed diet for much of the year, contributing to the exceptional quality of our beef. During the winter months the cattle are fed whole crop home produced silage, oats, barley and straw.

Our suckler herd is made up of crossbreeds, carefully selected for their hardiness and meat quality. We breed using Aberdeen Angus, South Devon, and Charolais bulls, producing strong, healthy calves.

Our family farm is proudly run by Mark and Tim Lea, continuing a tradition of hands-on, sustainable farming. When you visit our shop, you’re not just buying food – you are supporting a working family farm!

We look forward to welcoming you soon.
