A splash of February colour! The first pick of our homegrown rhubarb is now in our Farm Shop near Coventry! It’s as fresh as it gets, grown just 200m from the shelf.
Are you one to indulge in the timeless comfort of classic rhubarb crumble or embark on a flavourful adventure with rhubarb gin?
It’s always pleasing to see the rhubarb emerge, a sign that spring is on it’s way.
The new patch of rhubarb in the field behind the farm shop is now very well established. The crowns were planted into a raised bed with a water pipe for irrigation, covered by black Mypex. Rhubarb is quite a thirsty crop the mypex helps suppress weeds and reduce water loss through evaporation. Trickle irrigation is a very efficient way to water the crop.
Timperley Early is high-yielding and the variety we grow and probably the most well known rhubarb cultivar. The thick stems are deep red at the base, passing to light green with red flecks; flesh is green. This cultivar was bred for forcing but we have found that it also performs very well outside. The red colour is more pronounced when forced.
